back to the Dollhouse Workshop
  • I am ready to paint the railing parts. The sponges are small-celled sponges (like sponge rubber). My paintbrush is in a plastic bag. I also have two cookie sheets covered with waxed paper.
    rails01.jpg
  • I dab paint on one sponge - less is better!
    rails02.jpg
  • A few dowels
    rails03.jpg
  • Set the second sponge over the first. Rub the dowels back and forth - the dowels will take paint from the sponge (again, less is better)
    rails05.jpg
  • Dump the painted dowels on the waxed paper; spread them so the paint won't stick them together
    rails06.jpg
  • Move the dowels every few minutes so they won't stick to each other or leave a flat spot where they are touching the waxed paper
    rails07.jpg
  • When the dowels are dry, lay a few at a time on a cutting-board...
    rails08.jpg
  • and gently scrub them around with a piece of 320 grit sandpaper. When they feel smooth and 'soft', they are done
    rails09.jpg
  • Paint the Rails (you can paint one end at a time and get less paint on your hands than I did). Do not leave a build-up of paint in the groove
    rails20.jpg
  • Let the paint dry
    rails21.jpg
  • Sand the Rails
    rails22.jpg
  • Sand the grooves
    rails23.jpg
  • Set the Rail on the picture. Some instructions have pictures of the assembled railing, some have marking guides. Whatever instruction you have, follow it for this step
    rails31.jpg
  • There is a puddle of glue on a waste stick. There is a stick under the dowels for support. Dip the dowel in the glue and push it into the groove at each dowel location
    rails32.jpg
  • Let the glue dry for a few minutes so it will be a little stiff
    rails33.jpg
  • Dab glue onto each dowel end
    rails34.jpg
  • Tip the second rail onto the dowel ends - push down firmly and scoop the dowels into the groove
    rails34b.jpg
  • Push the rail tight onto the dowels - or...
    rails34c.jpg
  • ...Start on one end and feed the dowels one-at-a-time into the groove
    rails35.jpg
  • Try to keep the spacing even
