Measuring and Fractions

One Inch. The basic unit of measurement for dollhouses

This is the inch symbol "

One half inch (1/2")

There are two halfs in one inch (1/2 + 1/2 = 1)

Find the measurement that woould be 3 1/2" (three and one half inches)

One quarter inch (1/4")

There are four quarters in one inch (1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 1")
There are two quarters in one half inch (1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2)

See 3 3/4"? (three and three quarters")... find 3 1/4"

Eighths of an inch (1/8") There are eight of them between each inch mark.

Notice that the 1/4" marks (2 eighths) and the 1/2" marks (4 eighths) are longer, but they are still counted when counting the spaces for eighths

See 3 5/8"? (three and five eighths)... find 4 3/8"

Sixteenths of an inch. There are sixteen of them between each mark
16/16 = one inch

Again notice that you count all of the longer marks. Each step of the way, you count the marks for that fraction and the longer marks, but not the shorter marks

Where is 3 15/16? [hint: 3 16/16 = 4", so 3 15/16 is 1/16 less than 4]

Thirtyseconds of an inch - now that's small, but some rulers show them

Each 1/16" mark stands for two 1/32" so 7/32 is the same as
three and one half 1/16" spaces (2 + 2 + 2 + 1)

A measurement of 19/32 would be the same as
nine and one half 1/16" spaces
which is the same as 1/2" + 1/16" + half of 1/16"... can you find it?
